recently passed U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act gives the FDA
authority to be proactive in making farmers and food manufacturers
more responsible for preventing contamination. The bill requires
more frequent inspections of facilities and provides the FDA with
greater authority over recalls. Food safety consultants are
instrumental in helping food producers, food chain suppliers and
retail outlets prepare for certification audits to any of a number
of standards approved by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
Four GFSI-approved standards now exist – the British Retail
Consortium’s (BRC) Global Standard for Food Safety, the
International Food Standard (IFS), the (Dutch) National Board of
Experts Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) and the
Safe Quality Food (SQF) 2000 Code. In addition, ISO 22000 with added
specifications for food manufacturers was approved by the GFSI and
is known as FSSC 22000. The Food Safety System Certification (FSSC)
body manages this popular certification scheme and is responsible
for the accreditation of registrars.
